Plastic Hinges at Columns and Beams (5.4.2.3)

  • In columns and beams, plastic hinges are automatically placed in the middle of the plastic deformation zone of the columns or beams.

ICONS

L p = Plastic joint length

According to 5.4.2.3 of TBDY , plastic hinges can be placed at the ends of the clear span of columns or beams. However, according to Article 5.3.1.4 of TBDY , the plastic joint should be placed in the middle of the plastic deformation zone. The approach specified in TBDY 5.4.2.3 is an idealized approach.

Plastic hinges are placed in the middle of the plastic deformation zone as described in Article 5.3.1.4 of TBDY , as shown by the red dot in the picture below. Since the plastic deformation zone is spread along the length of the plastic hinge, L p , the plastic hinge is defined at a distance L p / 2 from the ends of the defined elements in the clean opening .
