Notations

Wel, min = Minimum elastic section modulus
Weff, min = Minimum effective section modulus
Wpl = Plastic section modulus
MEd = Design bending moment
Mc, Rd = Design resistance for bending about one principal axis of a cross-section
fy = Yield strength
YMO = partial factor for resistance of cross-sections whatever the class is
YMI = partial factor for resistance of members to instability assessed by member checks
YM2 = partial factor for resistance of cross-sections in tension to fracture

Bending Member Definition

These are elements that are under the effect of a simple flexural moment around their principal axes. For the elements that are under the effect of the simple flexural moment, the loads should be acting in the plane parallel to the principal axis passing through the shear center or the element should be supported against torsion at the load application points and supports.

6.2.5 Bending moment

Design of bending elements is determined according to Eq. 6.12.

  • Bending strength is determined according to Eq. 6.13, 6.14 and 6.15.

for class 1 or 2 cross sections

for class 3 cross sections

for class 4 cross sections
